The Chinese Zodiac assigns a different animal for each birth year, repeating the cycle every 12 years. Consistent with the Chinese Yin/Yang principle, which states that positive and negative energies coexist in every person and thing, each Chinese Zodiac animal possesses positive and negative qualities. Those who follow the Chinese Zodiac believe that persons born in a certain year exhibit the qualities of their Zodiac animal. All animals are advised to marry one of a few specific other animals and avoid a few other specific animals. Since the Chinese follow the lunar calendar, those with January or February birthdays may have a different sign than Chinese Zodiac charts suggest. In this instance, see the paragraph below on how to find this out,
Instructions
Subtract (1 year) from your birth year if your birthday is between January 1 and February 4th to obtain your Chinese birth year. For example, if you were born on January 20th, 1984, your Chinese birth year is 1983. Because the Chinese New Year falls on the 4th or 5th of February every year, if your birthday is between February 3rd – 6th, you can enter your birth date into a Lunar calendar converter to find your actual Chinese birth year. You can find this on a Travel China guide website, to name one.
