Help Finding the History of a Property

Finding the Correct Date the Property was Built

Why is Finding Out About The Properties History Vital

Just as a baby's first breath marks its entry into the world, a building's birth is symbolised by the placement of its roof. The foundation anchors the structure to the earth, while the roof encapsulates cosmic energy within a specific timeframe and space. To understand the 'chi' that permeates a building, we use various information, including the 'sitting' and 'facing directions of the property (which is not always obvious) and the date the building was constructed.

Feng Shui recognises 20-year cycles called 'Periods', part of a 180-year Grand Cycle. There are nine periods in total, and your property will be one of these periods.

  • Period 1: 1864 - 1883
  • Period 2: 1884 - 1903
  • Period 3: 1904 - 1923
  • Period 4: 1924 - 1943
  • Period 5: 1944 - 1963
  • Period 6: 1964 - 1983
  • Period 7: 1984 - 2003
  • Period 8: 2004 - 2023
  • Period 9: 2024 - 2043

Importance of Assuring Correct Date

  • One critical piece of information supplied by the client is the year the property was built/completed. Various reports or documents related to a property may provide a date for the house, such as the house deed, real estate description or surveyor’s report. However, these can easily be incorrect. It's essential to take a little time to verify the house’s exact year of construction to avoid wasting time and money due to an inaccurate Feng Shui assessment.

Find the Correct Date:

  • For period properties, this requires some effort by you. Detective work is required by triangulating several types of information; you can often arrive at a date you are confident of.
  • Since learning about their history, clients have mentioned that they felt much more connected to their properties.
  • Time finding the construction date is unique to every property. Depending on the property's history, it can take a couple of hours or up to a day and a half. The longer timeline is when several pieces of information fall between two Feng Shui periods, and further investigation is required to confirm.
  • Consider the architectural style and features of the house, such as the type of roof and position of windows. Significant damage occurred during the war; look at different styles of architecture on your street.

Take a Free Genealogy Trial:

  • The best way is to take a 'free trial' on one of the Genealogy databases such as ‘Find My Past’, ‘Ancestry’ and 'My Heritage' to access many records, including birth and death, census, prison, will probates, and many others records which can't be accessed otherwise.
  • Alternatively, the local library usually has a subscription.

Suggested Resources for Dating a Property:

  • Search 2,000 properties recorded in the 1862 Act register
  • Check your 'local' archives, such as parish records, county record offices or your local library.
  • Search your address through census returns which exist in ten-year intervals, starting in 1841. Remember to check the previous census (10 yrs prior) once you find your house to ensure you capture the very first mention of it. The census will not date the house but does provide proof that it existed. It also provides you with the names and other personal information about the residents, which you can research through other sources. To be clear, the census won’t tell you the date of the construction. However, by triangulating several types of information, you can often arrive at a date you are confident of.
  • See if your house is listed in Historic England's National Heritage List for England
  • Explore historical editions of Ordnance Survey maps
  • Consider the architectural style and features of the house, such as the type of roof and position of windows. Significant damage occurred during the war; look at different styles of architecture on your street.
  • Contact a local history society.
  • Speak to neighbours.
  • A general Google search of the names of past residents may yield information through probate records, etc.

An incorrect date has significant implications for the extensive analysis that will go into preparing the Feng Shui report; you are fully responsible for ensuring the information submitted is correct.

What Clients have shared

Many clients have found the small amount of research on the house and its former residents to be a fascinating part of their Feng Shui process.

When Renovations, Remodels Alter the Energies

Different Ways the Construction Number Can Change

  1. When a majority of the house burns down, or endures a fire so bad that every room needs new walls.
  2. When a property has been bombed during a war.
  3. When only one original wall is left standing during a remodel.
  4. When a large portion of the ceiling is removed from the house. Note: It is important to make a distinction between a ceiling and a roof. Every house will have a new roof replaced every 20 years or so, but if the ceiling stays intact, the original energy stays in the house. It is only when the rays of the sun shine down onto an exposed foundation for at least 2 weeks that new energy is created.
  5. When a house is lifted off the ground to allow for a new foundation to be poured.
  6. When a house is moved completely to a new location.
  7. When the house is brought down to the framing on all sides and totally exposed to the elements (wind, sun and rain) while it is being rebuilt.
  8. When the structure radically changes its identity (i.e., a house is turned into a restaurant or a church turned into a movie theatre).
  9. If more than 50%  of the square metre/ footage of the original house has been added via a remodel. In other words, the square metre /footage of the house has more than doubled with the remodel.
  10. When large skylights are installed throughout the home, and the roof and ceiling are left open for at least 2 weeks during that remodelling process.

Manual Measuring:

How to Draw a Floor Plan to Scale

If you're not tech-savvy or prefer doing things the traditional way, here is the process for accurate measuring.

  1. Purchase a graph pad with each square equal to one centimetre of paper, or create your own grid of equal squares on a blank sheet of paper. Imagine each square represents one foot (30 centimetres).
  2. Measure the length of one wall with the tape measure.
  3. Draw a line on the graph paper to represent this length of wall by counting the squares. For example, if the wall is two metres sixty centimetres long, count out eight and two-thirds squares (since each square represents 30 centimetres).
  4. Measure the length of each wall around the room.
  5. Measure the length of each door and window opening (without frames) and add them to the drawing.
  6. Draw windows as double lines and doors with a line and an arc.

What option to take

  1. The easiest option is to pay for a professional to come to your space and create a floor plan from scratch. This is good if you have had extensive renovation work or don't have a floorplan at all.
  2. Hiring a freelancer to create a basic floorplan is an excellent option if the property is small and you are happy to measure walls and hand draw your property.
  3. On the other hand, the app is designed with user-friendliness in mind, making it a perfect fit for tech-savvy and budget-conscious users. It's particularly useful if you already have a floor plan and only need minor adjustments.
  4. Another option is a hand-drawn floor plan, particularly for those who prefer a manual option and a cost-free one.
